The Lord Botetourt girls’ basketball team was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten when the Cavaliers lost at home to William Fleming last week. The visiting Colonels took a 62-35 win as Botetourt went down to defeat for the first time after opening the season with 11 straight wins.
“We got behind early and were down 24-7 at the end of the first quarter,” said LB coach Renee Favaro. “That really hurt us because we haven’t had to play from that far behind all year and you can’t get down like that to a team with so many scorers like Fleming has.”
It just wasn’t LB’s night, as the quick Colonels forced turnovers that resulted in 20 more shots from the field than LB.
“We also shot our lowest percentage from the field and from the three on the season,” said Favaro.
Maddie Caron led the Cavaliers with 18 points and eight rebounds.
“Just wasn’t our night and we will regroup,” said Favaro. “This team is really close-knit and it will just drive us moving forward.”
The Cavaliers will try to get back on the winning track with a busy schedule this week. They were at Franklin County Tuesday and Thursday they host Patrick Henry, who comes into the week at 7-6 but has played a strong Class 4 schedule. LB had a home game with Northside postponed last Friday and that’s set to be made up this Friday.
Next Tuesday, January 28, they host Staunton River. That should be a good one as the Eagles were 11-0 coming into the week.
