The Lord Botetourt girls exploded for four girls in the first 10 minutes of the second half to break a halftime tie and win the Blue Ridge District soccer tournament last Friday. Botetourt took a 7-3 win over host William Byrd at Vinton’s Patterson Stadium.
The game was tied 2-2 after a hard fought first half, but LB came out smoking after intermission. Botetourt peppered the Byrd cage, hitting the net five times in the second half for the win.
“Byrd gave us a tough match in the first half,” said LB coach Giuseppe D’Arpa. “Our girls rallied in the second half.”
Briana Myers finished with a three-goal hat trick and she also had an assist. Also scoring for LB were Ava Brumfield, Allie Plenge, Balor Harold and Claire Hufton. Harold, Mikel Johnson, Mary-Randall Plunkett and Kierstyn Stanley had assists.
The Cavaliers beat Northside in the semifinal, 3-0, as Spangler, Myers and Allison Kirby scored. Carleigh Booth had her 11th shutout of the season.
Now, 16-2, the girls will host Alleghany on Thursday in an opening round game at 5:30 p.m. Botetourt is the number one seed, and if LB wins the Cavaliers would advance to the semifinals May 28 at Northside against the winner of a first round game between Staunton River and Christiansburg.
