The Lord Botetourt girls got a late start to their basketball season but they’re making up for lost time. The girls opened last week with three wins in three nights after starting late due to coronavirus concerns.

The girls opened with a 79-28 pounding of Parry McCluer in Daleville last Tuesday. Grace Taylor led the Cavaliers with 20 points, sinking six of eight from behind the three-point arc. Briana Myers had 14 points and eight assists for LB.

“It was a great team win led by our two returning seniors,” said coach Renee Favaro. “They not only scored, but they also sparked our energy and made everyone else follow suit.”

A night later LB hosted Giles and took a 69-26 win as 11 different Cavaliers scored. Taylor and Ally Spangler led the team with 13 points each and Rhyann Jones added a dozen points and as many rebounds. Myers, the point guard, had 11 assists and just one turnover.

On Thursday perennial state Class 2 contender Floyd came to town and gave the Cavaliers a run, but the defending Class 3 LB girls finished strong in a 57-47 win.

Botetourt led by 16 in the second quarter but the Buffalo gals rallied and took the lead in the third period. Taylor’s clutch three-pointer put LB back ahead to stay as the girls pulled away down the stretch.
Taylor finished with 17 points and 10 boards for LB while Myers had 11 points and eight assists. Spangler had 12 points and Jada Morgan had 12 rebounds and five blocks.

“I’ve been impressed with our passing and balance through the first three games,” said Favaro. “We have a lot of people putting the ball in the basket and we are doing a lot of things, like rebounding and defending, by committee.”

Botetourt has four players averaging eight or more points through three games and Myers has 27 assists with just four turnovers.

“She has a remarkable feel for the game and vision,” said Favaro. “She just knows how to put people in positions to be successful and can see things before they happen.”

The girls are busy again this week with a home game against Carroll County Tuesday, a trip to Floyd tonight and a Friday home game with Carroll County. That will be “Senior Night” for the LB cheerleaders.

“As a whole we certainly have some things we need to clean up and need to do a better job on the boards, but I am definitely pleased with our first week showing,” said Favaro.
