The Botetourt Cavaliers 8U football team scored the only touchdown of the game in overtime to win the Sandlot Super Bowl championship last Saturday at Bogle Field in Roanoke County. The Cavaliers beat the Glenvar 8U team, 6-0.
This game was a defensive battle. Glenvar appeared to score on a “pick six” late in the fourth quarter but the touchdown was negated by a blocking penalty on the return. Glenvar maintained possession but the Cavaliers kept them from scoring and it was 0-0 after regulation.
Botetourt went first in the overtime period and Andrew Eggleston scored on fourth down from the two on a sweep to the left. Glenvar went next and Botetourt’s defense got a sack, then held to clinch the win.
The Botetourt team is coached by Jim Phillips with assistants Tommy Morgan, Jonathan Wilson, Bradley Beckner, Justin Beckner and Josh Dix. The Super Bowl tournaments include teams from Botetourt County, Roanoke County, Franklin County, and Salem.
Salem won the other two games at Bogle Saturday. In the 10U final, Salem beat Cave Spring Red, 18-6. In the 12U final, Salem beat Franklin County in three overtimes, 30-24.
