The Lord Botetourt wrestlers will open their season with “Senior Night” tonight in Daleville. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. against Franklin County.
“I didn’t feel like I needed to jump right in and start competing against other teams until we had an ample amount of time to train and prepare,” said LB coach Chuck Burton. “And, it’s tough finding opponents at this time with everyone playing by different rules.”
The Cavaliers will be back home this Saturday at 11 a.m. for a tri-match against Liberty Christian Academy and Pulaski County. After that the schedule is yet to be determined, and the Cavaliers are down several members due to COVID opt outs and other reasons.
“I understand them all and support all of my kids and families that have decided to opt out for this season,” said Burton. “Hopefully, things will return to normal by next season and I’ll get them all back in the fold. But, for the moment, we have 17 kids working their tails off and hoping for the best.
“The important thing is that we are taking all the right precautions, being extra vigilant with COVID safety protocols, and preparing to wrestle. The kids have done a great job so far and I’m excited to see them on the mat soon.”
