Lord Botetourt junior Madilyn Winterton has been named to the Virginia High School League Class 3 All-State basketball team. Madilyn was a second team selection while making the all-state team for the second year in a row.
Winterton led the 22-4 Cavaliers with 11.5 points per game and 3.8 steals per game. She was second on the team with 3.8 assists per game and the top “non-post player” rebounder with 5.1 boards per contest.
“Madilyn is a Swiss army knife player who can play any position on the floor both offensively and defensively,” said LB coach Renee Favaro. “Her points and rebounds per game are down from a year ago but we had a lot more people this year who could really score. Our balance is what made us special. We did not have anyone on our team take more than 10 shots per game, which is a testament to how unselfish the whole group is. I think had we not fallen short of the state tournament we may have had more kids named all-state.”
Carroll County senior shooting guard Alyssa Ervin was named the Class 3 Player of the Year, and Liberty Christian Academy (LCA) head coach Heather Stephens is the Class 3 Coach of the Year. Eight players make up the first and second teams, regardless of position. Only those players selected to all-region first teams are eligible for selection to the all-state team. The all-state selection committee comprises eight basketball coaches, with two from each region.
