Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Boyd Vernon Shaver Jr., 88, of Roanoke, went to be with our Lord, Friday, October 29, 2021.
Born August 27, 1933 in Buchanan, he was the son of Boyd (Sr.) and Ruth Shaver and brother of Barbara (Shaver) Templeton. He attended and graduated from Buchanan High School, where he was the quarterback of the football team and destined to marry the head cheerleader, Peggy (Camper) Shaver. The couple wed in January of 1953 and not long after would be blessed with five children, Danny, Jeff, Dennis, Pamela, and Ricky. Boyd would spend the children’s growing up years taking them on adventures and teaching them to hunt and fish at the creek; enjoying Sunday family picnics at Cave Mountain Lake, Peaks of Otter, or the Blue Ridge Parkway. And most fondly, trips in the Volkswagen Beetle with the five children in the backseat driving to visit extended family in Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina. He enjoyed his time with his family and caring for his home and could often be found working in the yard, washing cars, or cleaning the house.
Boyd began his career working in the grocery store in Buchanan. Desiring more opportunity for himself and his family, he took a position in Roanoke, where he was a route salesman for Strietmann Company for a number of years. He would eventually secure a salesman position with Lawrence Transfer and Storage where he eventually retired after 35 years of service. He was a lifetime volunteer member of the Williamson Road Life Saving Crew.
After his many years of service in the workforce, Boyd and Peggy would have the wonderful opportunity to experience traveling across the country and enjoying one another’s company. Boyd was a member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He loved spending time outdoors, particularly hunting in the fall/winter and fishing in the spring/summer. An avid lover of planes, Boyd enjoyed trips to Reno, Nev., for the air races with his sons. If he was not outside, you could find him next to his loving wife and sweet fur child, “Sweetpea.” Boyd will be remembered for his witty humor, positive charisma, and tender heart.
Boyd is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Peggy; his children, Danny and wife Becky, Jeff and wife Jody, Dennis and wife Nancy, Pamela, and Ricky. In addition to his five children and daughter-in-laws, he is survived by 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
