The Lord Botetourt boys and girls tennis teams both advanced to regional play by finishing second in their Conference 31 tournaments. Both teams lost to Rockbridge in conference final matches.
The girls team beat Staunton River in the Conference 31 quarterfinals, 5-0, then defeated Alleghany in the semifinals, 5-2. The girls lost to Rockbridge in the finals, 5-2.
In this week’s individual tournament, Abby Pearl won her opening singles match over Sullivan Ray of Rockbridge, but Reagan Bullins lost her match to Kate Beline of Alleghany. Abby and Reagan combined to win their doubles match against Staunton River in the first round.
For the boys, LB beat Alleghany in the semifinal and won 5-1. Winners were Caleb Beckner, Jake Bryant, Matt Manos, Ryan Gathje and Tucker Grimshaw in singles. Grimshaw and Gathje won in doubles.
LB lost 5-2 in the finals at Rockbridge.
“We made a strong comeback at the end which gave us a chance, we just came up a little short on several matches,” said coach Peter Walton.
Singles and doubles for Conference 31 are this week, beginning Tuesday. Noah Bryant and Caleb Beckner will be playing singles and Botetourt will have two doubles teams, Noah Bryant and Beckner at one and Jake Bryant and Manos at two.
Both teams will be playing in regional team matches in the coming week at times to be determined.
