The Town of Buchanan is holding its sixth annual Garden Festival this Saturday, May 4. Volunteers from throughout the community are working with the town to add more features to the event so that there is a little bit of something for everyone.
Activities begin at 10 a.m. with students recreating the turn of the century traditional folk dance around the May Pole.
Local DJ Randy Riddle will be providing sound for the performers, including Rebecca Bryant, known as the Singing Cowgirl, in addition to Warren and Kelly Amberson, founders of Acoustic Endeavors.
More than 30 vendors are registered to show and sell flowers, plants, garden decorations, home improvement services, art, antiques, handmade crafts, jewelry and more in the shade of Purgatory Mountain on the Town Park and historic Wilson Warehouse at 485 Lowe Street. Sharin’ Flowers will be set up as part of the day’s activities offering beautiful plants, flowers and hanging baskets for thehome and garden. Food will be offered on site by The Witt Stop as well as available at the restaurants along Main Street. In addition to food, there will be a Wine Garden by Blue Ridge Vineyards.
Art is a growing theme of the Garden Festival with Candace Monaghan offering “Art In the Garden” paint session with proceeds benefitting Solomon’s Mission as well as the Plein Air Paint Competition where competitors will be set up on site to produce paintings which will be placed on display for viewing as well as the opportunity for you to cast your vote for your favorite painting.
The Roanoke Master Gardeners will be set up offering the latest garden advice as well as holding Garden Talks at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at their tent on the park.
Special activities planned for the kids include a kids’ area featuring games and an Art Wall. New to this year’s festival is the special “Children’s Tea Party” at 1 p.m. and “Touch A Tractor” sponsored by James River Equipment.
Members of the Buchanan Special Events Committee will be set up selling Festival T-shirts as well as tickets for an opportunity to win garden décor prizes from Plow & Hearth.
