Buchanan VFW Post 5895 closes after years of declining membership

After years of declining participation and mounting challenges, VFW Post 5895 in Buchanan has officially closed, marking the end of a long-standing presence in the local veteran community.

Post Commander Bill Price said the decision to surrender the post’s charter and flag came down to one central issue: inactivity.

“It was really the inactivity of the post,” Price said. “Our membership was aging, dealing with health issues, and we just weren’t bringing in younger members who could be active.”

A key factor in the closure was the post’s inability to consistently meet a quorum – the minimum number of members required to conduct official business. Without enough members present at meetings, the post could no longer function in an official capacity.

“We just couldn’t meet that requirement anymore,” Price said.

When a VFW post closes, the process is handled in coordination with the state organization. In this case, the post formally surrendered its charter and ceremonial flag, and any official property must be turned over for redistribution.

Because the Buchanan post did not own a building or significant assets, the process was relatively simple.

“We didn’t have much,” Price said. “We met in a rented event space, so really it came down to turning in the charter and the flag.”

According to Price, the post had struggled for at least two years with attendance and membership. Like many small-town organizations, it faced a shrinking pool of active participants.

Despite those challenges, Post 5895 remained involved in the community. Members participated in local parades, including Buchanan’s Fourth of July and Christmas events, helped maintain a section of Lee Highway, and supported veterans’ ceremonies such as placing flags and wreaths on graves for Memorial Day.

Those efforts, Price said, will likely continue in some form, but no longer under the structure of an official VFW post.

“Members will still help where they can,” he said. “It just won’t be organized through the post anymore.”

With the charter surrendered, members of Post 5895 will be notified by the state VFW of their options. Annual members may transfer to another post, while life members may remain unaffiliated but retain their status.

For Price, the closure carries personal weight.

“I hoped to grow the post and make it more active in the community,” he said. “That just didn’t happen.”

He said the most difficult part was making the final decision.

“You never want to be the person who turns out the lights,” Price said. “Even if it’s nobody’s fault.”

Price believes the closure reflects a broader trend affecting VFW posts, particularly in smaller communities.

Eligibility requirements – such as service in a designated combat zone – limit the pool of potential members. At the same time, younger veterans often face competing demands from work and family life. He also noted shifting expectations among younger generations.

While Post 5895 has closed, the possibility remains that it could one day be re-established. Doing so would require a sufficient number of eligible veterans in Buchanan willing to take on active roles and reapply for a charter.

A similar rebound occurred decades ago, when an influx of veterans revitalized the post after a previous decline. Price said such a resurgence would depend on demographic changes and renewed community involvement.

“You’d need a group of people willing to step up and rebuild it,” he said.

For now, the closure represents both the end of an era and a reflection of the evolving challenges facing veteran organizations in rural communities.

“Though Buchanan’s VFW Post 5895 has closed, the mission of serving and honoring veterans, encouraging youth, and supporting the community continues through American Legion Post 93, its Sons of the Legion squadron, and Legion Riders group,” said Post 93 Commander Charlie Alphin, who is also a member of the former Buchanan VFW Post. “Many VFW Post 5895 members are also part of American Legion Post 93, which meets at the Botetourt Event Center on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. All military veterans are encouraged to join and participate.”

Botetourt County veterans seeking membership to the VFW may inquire by contacting the VFW Post 1841 (Daleville) Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/242598472826436.
