Mrs. May’s eighth grade art students and students in Mrs. Hylton’s gifted program at Central Academy Middle School worked collaboratively on a project to bring monsters to life for third grade students at Breckinridge Elementary School.
Third grade students in Mrs. Swandby’s class and Mrs. Schulz’s class were asked to draw their best monsters, name them, and send them to eighth grade artists. Art students then created their own sketches of the monsters and made 3D models based on the drawings they received from third graders.
Students in the gifted program channeled their creativity to write stories about the monsters, some of which included monsters that battled for power, and others included monsters that became best friends.
When the project was complete, CAMS students visited Breckinridge Elementary School. Students at Breckinridge were able to meet the authors and artists who worked on bringing their monsters to life. The authors read the stories they wrote, and artists presented their sculptures and sketches. Third grade students then went on a gallery walk to see all of the monsters their friends created.
