James River senior Caitlin Canada scored 17 points in Monday’s 49-29 win over Glenvar in Springwood, making her the all-time leading scorer in Knights girls’ basketball.

Canada came into the game needing just two points to break Jennifer Windsor’s record of 1,423, set 20 years ago. It didn’t take long for the senior standout to eclipse the mark and lead the Knights to a 17-3 overall record. Canada scored her 1,000th point as a junior and has three regular season games and the post-season to add to her current total of 1,439 points.

With the win the girls are 8-2 in the district with two games to go. Alleghany is undefeated in district play and the Knights will host the Cougars on Friday night in Springwood in a big game. That looked like a chance to tie Alleghany for the lead in the Three Rivers before James River was upset in Radford last week, 59-48.

“A strong third quarter by Radford was the difference in the game,” said River coach Donald Eggleston. “We could not stop (Kearson) Carter. She was able to do anything she wanted to do in the second half.”

Carter finished with 34 points for the Bobcats while Canada had 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Knights. Keira Crawford had 13 points.

River bounced back on Friday with a 46-36 win over Patrick County in Springwood. River went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter to take command. Canada had 17 points, Audrey Benson had nine and Jennah Lynch had seven.

“A bounce back performance at the free throw line was key (team 78%),” said Eggleston. “The second quarter with key with defensive stops and steals.”

The Knights, now 17-3 overall, have a non-district game with Staunton on Thursday at home. After Friday’s home game with Alleghany the Knights are scheduled to wrap up the regular season with a home game against Floyd next Monday, February 17.
