The James River baseball team played a rare Saturday afternoon game last weekend and dropped a 7-0 decision to Carroll County. The varsity game was the second of a jayvee-varsity doubleheader in Hillsville.
Carroll only scored in two innings against the Knights, but a five-run second put River in a hole early in the game. Kody Park started on the mound and Zeal Hammons, Hunter Mays and Maddox Woodyard also saw time on the bump for River.
“Just one inning where Carroll hit the ball put us in the hole early,” said LB coach Chance Henry. “It doesn’t help that we couldn’t get anyone in offensively. We had our opportunities to do so but couldn’t break through.”
The Knights had three hits, two for leadoff man Mays and one by Logan Joyce. Three Carroll pitchers combined to strike out 14.
James River will be looking to bounce back this week with two Three Rivers District games. They were scheduled to play at Floyd Tuesday followed by a home game with Alleghany on Friday.
“We’re pushing to get it going in the right direction and have some sustained success,” said Henry. “Our process is improving every day and we’re hopeful better results are coming soon.”
