One bad inning was all it took to end the Lord Botetourt baseball season as the Cavaliers fell to Cave Spring on Monday. The host Knights took a 9-3 win in the Region 3D semifinal.
Cave Spring scored eight of the nine runs in the second inning, chasing LB starting pitcher Nate Prince with a variety of bunts and well-struck balls as well as a few LB miscues. Prince gave up six earned runs before Colin Sell came on to stop the bleeding with two outs in the second inning, and Sell pitched three and a third innings of scoreless ball. The Cavaliers rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh but it was too little, too late.
LB ended the season with a final record of 15-7, while Cave Spring advances to Wednesday’s region semifinal.
“We had a solid year, not a great year,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “We knew we could hit, but I wasn’t sure about our pitching. We did win our first district tournament in 12 years, and we had some big wins.”
