LB’s offensive line opens a hole in last week’s win in Daleville.
Quinten Jones scores LB’s first touchdown on a 46-yard run.

The Lord Botetourt football team will be facing their toughest test of the young season Friday when they travel to Danville to take on George Washington High School. The Eagles are a Class 4 team out of the Piedmont District with a strong football tradition.

“They’re big, fast and athletic,” said LB coach Jamie Harless. “I think their smallest lineman is 265 pounds and they have a 250-pound fullback. They have good skill players, like they always do.”

The Eagles have started the season 2-1. They lost their opener to Reidsville of North Carolina but won their last two, 28-14 over Amherst County and 17-13 over E.C. Glass on September 12. The Eagles had a bye last week so they’ve had two weeks to prepare for LB.

The Cavaliers have started the season 4-0, including a 42-7 Homecoming win over Christiansburg in Daleville last Friday. The Cavaliers led 35-7 at the half and never looked back.

“Our kids delivered well on the physical end,” said Harless. “We had good execution and they played fast. We had 95 plays in the first half alone.”

LB’s Quentin Jones ran 80 yards for an apparent score on the first play of the game but that was negated by a holding penalty. Jones then ran 46 yards for a touchdown and the Cavs led 7-0 after one quarter.

Botetourt pulled away in the second quarter. Jones scored on a three-yard run, then Angel Rigney scored on a nine-yard run and Jones scored a two-point conversion. Angel had two more touchdown runs of four and 15 yards before intermission.

Rigney scored his fourth TD of the night, on a four-yard run in the third quarter, and from that point there was a running clock. Angel finished with 228 yards rushing on 22 carries while Jones had 201 on 20 atttempts as LB shredded the Demon defense on the ground. Rigney was six for eight passing for 108 more yards with four to Jones and a 61-yard hookup with Rylen Wright.

The LB junior varsity also won last week against Christiansburg to remain undefeated. The Cavaliers will host George Washington in a jayvee game Thursday at 6 p.m. at Lord Botetourt High.
