It was a little closer last week but the Lord Botetourt golfers had the low score again in their Blue Ridge District golf match. This round was played on William Byrd’s home course in Roanoke County, Blue Hills, and the Cavaliers edged the home-standing Terriers, 319 to 320, to remain undefeated in the BRD mini-tour.
“We didn’t play our best, but we played good enough to extend our lead in the district race,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “Hayden Firestone has really stepped up his game over the last few weeks and is playing with a lot of confidence. It was good to get a win with Alisa being out of town.”
LB was missing Alisa Davidova, who is the individual leader in the district standings. Firestone and Jeremy Simmons led the Cavaliers at Blue Hills with 78 each on the par 71 course. Jaxon Turner was next for LB with an 81 and Garrett Honts and Ethan Taylor tied for the final scoring spot at 82.
With the close win LB now leads second place Franklin County by 63 strokes after four rounds of play and 63 holes. The Cavs’ total is 1,061 with the Eagles at 1,124 and Byrd is third at 1,146.
Lord Botetourt also had a non-district match at the Blacksburg Country Club last Thursday.
“We didn’t play a traditional high school stroke play event,” said Smith. “We played all 12 golfers, split into two-man teams and played match play. Blacksburg won all six of the matches but they were all close, and the kids had a chance to play Blacksburg Country Club, which is always nice.”
The district was scheduled to play at Mariner’s Landing on Tuesday of this week, and next Tuesday, September 17, the BRD mini-tour comes to the Botetourt Golf & Swim Club.
