The Lord Botetourt softball team was one win away from a spot in the state tournament at the press deadline. The Cavaliers were in Christiansburg Tuesday for a Region 3D semifinal game, and the winner earns a spot in the state Class 3 tournament.
Last Friday in Hillsville both Cavalier teams scored two runs in the first inning. That was all the scoring until the bottom of the sixth inning when Carroll took a 3-2 lead to come within three outs of a win. However, the LB Cavs answered back in the top of the seventh.
Autumn Russell started the rally with a triple and Maya Mougin knocked her in to tie the game at 3-3. LB the rallied for three more runs for a 6-3 win.
“As we have all season, the girls showed so much fight and grit to come back and win the game,” said coach Megan Cook. “We are all excited and willing to do whatever it takes to get another game to play together!”
If the Cavaliers won Tuesday they would play either Staunton River or Abingdon in the championship game Friday night. They will also have a clinched a spot in the state tournament, with the region winner getting a quarterfinal home game and the runner-up playing on the road.
