The Lord Botetourt boys dropped all three of their games in the K-Guard Holiday Classic basketball tournament last week. The tournament was hosted by Cave Spring at the Salem Civic Center.
“I felt like we were competitive, but it was the same old song and dance,” said Cavalier coach Chad Conner. “We played well at times, and other times not so well.”
The Cavaliers opened with Hidden Valley and dropped a 51-42 decision. They fell behind early, trailing 28-14 at the half, and a second half rally fell short. Botetourt scored 20 points in the first three quarters and 22 in a spirited fourth quarter.
“We dig ourselves into holes,” said Conner. “We fight back, but we can’t quite catch up.”
Blake Myers led the Cavs with 12 points while Dylan Maclachlan had 11 points and eight rebounds. Max Burke had 10 points.
On Friday night the Cavs met Salem and lost 64-55 despite 22 points and 10 rebounds by Burke. Myers had 11 points and James Ryan Salvi hit three three-pointers for nine.
On Saturday Botetourt fell in the seventh place game, losing 75-64 to Floyd County. Burke had 19 and freshman Tanner Selkirk had four threes and finished with 16 points. Jacob Chandler had 15.
William Fleming won the tournament, defeating Cave Spring 58-53 in Saturday’s championship game. It was the fifth year in a row the Colonels have won the K-Guard tournament.
Botetourt fell to 2-9 on the season with the three losses. The Cavaliers will try to steer the boat back in the right direction this Friday when they return from the holiday break with a home game against Staunton River. Next Tuesday, Jan. 9, they’re back home to host Hidden Valley.
