Lord Botetourt and James River had 10 hits each but the Cavaliers put theirs to better use for a slaughter rule win over the Knights last week. The Cavaliers won 15-4 in Springwood.
Hunter Duke pitched the first four innings for LB and scattered nine hits while striking out four. Jared Arnholt pitched the fifth.
Jake Braun started for River and went the first three innings and took the loss. Drew Bond and Logan Wood had doubles for LB as the Cavaliers had 10 different players with one hit each. Chase Oberg and Ethan Loving had two hits each for River and Dyllan McAllister had a two-run double.
LB continued to pound the ball on Friday as the Cavs took a 13-8 win over visiting Northside. Patrick Kepler started this one and allowed three hits while striking out five in four and two-thirds innings while working around six walks. Dylan Fralin pitched the final two and a third innings for LB.
Meade Mayo was the standout on offense against the Vikings, going three-for-three with three runs batted in. Bryce Kelly had two hits and four runs batted in while Caleb Franklin and Wood had two hits each for LB.
With the win the Cavaliers improved to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the Blue Ridge District. They were rained out of a Tuesday game at William Byrd and that’s scheduled to be made up on Thursday of this week. On Friday the Cavs will host William Fleming for a doubleheader, with two five-inning games.
River’s struggle continued on Friday at Floyd with a 3-1 loss to the Buffaloes. Coulter Hodges started on the mound and allowed just two runs over five innings but took the loss nonetheless. Gabe Sebastino pitched the sixth and Braun had two hits for River.
“We’re struggling to put together a whole game right now but the team is still working and there is a lot of season left,” said coach Harry Falls.
The Knights are now 3-8 overall, having also lost to Radford in Springwood last week, 4-2 in eight innings. River will try to get back on track next Tuesday when the Knights travel to Glenvar. River had a game with Carroll County rained out on Tuesday of this week.
