The Lord Botetourt football team remained undefeated after three games with a 49-21 win over Altavista in Daleville last Friday. The Cavaliers jumped to an early lead and never looked back on “Rec Night.”

Botetourt was up 35-14 before the kids got to run the field at halftime. Quentin Jones got things started with 44- and 24-yard touchdowns runs to give the Cavs a 14-0 lead. The Colonels answered on a 14-yard TD pass just before the first period concluded, but Botetourt made it 28-7 in the second thanks to a 17-yard TD pass from Angel Rigney to Jones and a three-yard run for a score by Rigney. Angel added a 20-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Lonker to close out the half and Hudson Cummings was perfect on five extra point kicks.

The two teams traded scores in the third quarter, with Jones scoring his fourth touchdown of the night on a five-yard run. Rigney then put some icing on the cake with a one-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

“I thought we executed well against a good team,” said LB coach Jamie Harless. Altavista is a Class 1 school from the Dogwood District.

“I think they have a legitimate shot to win the state,” said Harless. “They’re fast. They have some kids that can flat out fly.”

Jones finished with 159 rushing yards and 78 receiving yards for LB. Rigney also had a big night with 106 rushing yards and 114 passing yards, running for two scores and throwing for two more. Botetourt had 379 yards of total offense.

The Cavaliers will be back home this Friday to host Christiansburg for Homecoming. The Blue Demons are off to an 0-3 start with losses to Carroll County, Abingdon and William Byrd last week by a 38-0 score. However, Harless won’t be taking them lightly.

“Their offensive coordinator, Ryan Poff, is from Salem and their offense is a carbon copy of Salem’s,” said Harless.

The LB jayvees also beat Altavista last week and are 2-0.
