The fall running season is racing toward conclusion with region cross country meets scheduled for this week. James River will run in the Region 2C meet today at Green Hill Park in West Roanoke County while Lord Botetourt will compete in the Region 3D meet Thursday at the Smith River Sports Complex in Axton, VA.
The Three Rivers District did not have a district meet but the Blue Ridge did, and LB dominated on the 5K course at Greenfield Recreation Park in Daleville last week. Both the Cavalier girls and boys won BRD championships to gain some momentum for this week’s regional.
“They all ran great,” said LB coach Elizabeth Wilson. “We had a lot to go all-district as well.”
The girls had two all-district runners as Erna Dietrich was second at 21:52 and Hatlyn Haggerty was fifth at 23:29. Also scoring were Alexa Carillo in sixth, Elizabeth Meadows in 12th place, and Falan Peters in 13th.
Olivia Hurd of William Byrd was the district champ with a time of 21:01. The Terriers were second in the district with 33 points, three points behind LB.
In the boys’ race Botetourt had 50 points to 58 for second place Staunton River. Sam Weddle of Staunton River was the individual champ with a time of 18:13 while LB’s best finish was a fourth by Cole Stelter in 18:56. Tristen Marshall also made all-district with a fifth place finish and also scoring for LB were Carter Hudson in seventh, Landon Hayes in 16th, and Jonah Clark in 18th place.
In this week’s Region 3B race the top three teams go to state along with the top five runners outside those teams. The same is true for the Region 2C meet today.
