The Lord Botetourt golfers are playing their best at the best possible time. Last week in Bristol, Tenn., the Cavs shot an even 300 to win the Region 3C golf championship at the Golf Club of Bristol.
Botetourt beat host Abingdon by 15 strokes, and both advance to next week’s Class 3 state tournament in Williamsburg, along with several individuals from schools that did not qualify as a team. The Cavaliers will play a practice round on Monday at the Williamsburg National Country Club Course, the site of Tuesday’s tournament.
LB coach Todd Smith credits a practice round in Bristol for much of last week’s success. While the host Abingdon players were quite familiar with the Bristol course, the LB golfers had little to no experience before a Monday practice round.
“The course was in good shape, but you had to know where to go,” said Smith. “Monday’s practice round was very beneficial. The kids were taking notes, and on Tuesday I could see them looking at their sheets before each hole. It was a fun day, especially doing it at their place.”
Sophomore Samir Davidov led the Cavaliers with an even par 71. Samir was second overall behind Will Watson of Abingdon, who shot a two under 69.
Botetourt’s depth proved to be the difference, as the Cavaliers had three scores of 75 or better. Ashton Harper had a 73, Kaitlyn Mosdell shot 75 and senior Kyle Lograsso rounded out the LB scoring with an 81.
Now the Cavaliers will turn their attention to next week’s state tournament, and if the Cavs continue to play like they did last week they should be in contention for the Class 3 championship in Williamsburg.
“We’ll need to play a good solid round to have a chance,” said Smith. “I know there’s one team from northern Virginia that’s supposed to be very good, but you’re going to have to play well to win the state.”
In addition, Mosdell has qualified for the girls’ state championship tournament, which will be held at the Heritage Oaks course in Harrisonburg on October 28.
