It was a busy time for the Lord Botetourt wrestlers last Saturday as the girls competed in a tournament in Lynchburg and the boys were at Big Stone Gap.
Two LB girls placed first at the PWC Winter Bash at Heritage High School. Serenity Shearer and Trinity Martin went undefeated at the tournament.
“It was not a VHSL event but still allowed our girls to get some mat time,” said LB coach Paul Craft.
The whole girls’ team will be attending the Third Annual Louisa County Ladies Invitational at Louisa County High School this Saturday. This will be their last girls-only event before the regional qualifier on Saturday, February 1 at Virginia High School in Bristol.
Botetourt’s starters and some backups wrestled at the Steve Gardner Memorial duals tournament at Union High School in Big Stone Gap last Saturday.
“We had a bunch of starters out sick and our backups stepped in just like they’re trained to do,” said Craft. “We bumped some guys around and challenged all of our guys and they responded well. We went 2-3 on the day and I think if we’re healthy we go 3-2 or 4-1 on the day. Regardless, we finished in 4th Place out of a large field.”
Botetourt had matches against teams from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Standout wrestlers on the day included Angel Rigney going 5-0 at 157 and Morgan Parr went 4-1 at 144.
“Heavyweight Tyler Butler wrestled some gritty matches and Aaden Thomas has been out all season and returned Saturday to go 2-0 at 215 pounds,” said Craft. “We had backup wrestlers up and down the lineup and answered the call and gave us their best. We couldn’t be prouder of their effort. It was a great tournament and we plan on returning.”
The Cavaliers will have Senior Night tonight at home against Franklin County and Radford. LB’s Gray Team (non-starters) will be at Parry McCluer on Saturday for a quad.
