Have you ever walked around the Courthouse Square in Fincastle? Have you looked at the “Old Jail” building with its New Orleans wrought iron railings? Have you ever wondered about the white clapboard building beside the jail? It was a tavern for the Western Hotel during Fincastle’s glory days as a resort town.
These two historic buildings, the brick jail dating from 1897, and the tavern circa 1809, are still standing thanks to the efforts of Historic Fincastle Inc. (HFI). In 1968, these two buildings were the first restoration projects tackled after HFI was formed to preserve and promote Fincastle – the County Seat of Botetourt County. And once again, HFI will celebrate this historic town with its annual Fincastle Festival. Plans are well underway and rapidly developing for the 52nd annual Fincastle Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18, offering a full schedule of fun, music, entertainment, history, and vendors.
Special arrangements are being made to ensure the event is even more diversified and attendee friendly this year, accenting the important history of the Botetourt County seat and a variety of activities for fun, entertainment, education, and treasured memories.
Offerings on tap include a growing number of artists, potters, and crafters. There is still time for other participants to sign up for booths and participation, and they may do so by downloading and submitting the application on the HFI website: hisfin.org.
Those interested in attending are encouraged to make plans now to be a part of and enjoy this special event which will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m.
