Democratic Committee to hold Zoom meeting
The Botetourt Democratic Committee will hold its scheduled September 14 meeting at 7p.m., using Zoom’s format. Current Democratic Committee members will receive e-mails containing instructions for linking to the meeting.
Guest speaker will be Botetourt County Registrar of Voters Traci Clark, who will discuss the many changes in voting procedures for the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election.
All Democrats who are not members of the Democratic Committee of Botetourt who wish to participate may request link information from Vice-Chair Lynne Bolton at lbolton5115@gmail.com. All interested Democratic Committee members and potential members are invited.
Annual meeting of Historical Society Thursday
The annual meeting of The Botetourt County Historical Society Inc. is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the parking lot area directly in front of the Botetourt County Historical Museum, on Courthouse Square in Fincastle. The rain date is Thursday, Sept. 17. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs and water.
An update on Botetourt County’s 250th anniversary plans will be provided and the group will hear a report on the status of the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors “Social Justice” Advisory Committee. Author Ed McCoy will be present to talk about his new book, “Chronicles of Botetourt,” which was published by the historical society. Signed copies of the book will be available for sale at the meeting.

Ruritans’ pulled pork BBQ dinner set for September 26
The Bonsack/Blue Ridge Ruritan Club is sponsoring a pulled pork barbeque dinner from 2-6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Bonsack United Methodist Church, 4493 Bonsack Road. The meal costs $8 and includes pulled pork, cole slaw, potato salad, watermelon and brownie (no drinks). It is take-out only and masks are required for pick-up. The meals will be available on a first-come, first-served basis; to reserve a meal, call Lou Rader at 540-400-7979.
VFW essay contests open for entries
VFW Post 1841 in Daleville encourages students in grades 6-12 to participate in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen contests. The theme for this year’s Voice of Democracy is “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?” and Patriot’s Pen theme is “What is Patriotism to Me?”
Rules for entry and applications can be found at www.VFW.org/community/youth-and-education/youthscholarships. Entries must be submitted to the local VFW Post by October 31 to be considered valid. VFW Post 1841, and the auxiliary, awards prizes for first, second and third place and first place winning entries are forwarded on for district competition.
