James Herman “JC” Cook, 79, of Moneta, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Mildred Cook; two brothers, Ralph Cook and Don Cook and his wife Gerry; sister, Merle Jones; and brother-in-law, Lewis Walter Jones.
James grew up in Blue Ridge, where he enjoyed hunting with his brothers and developed his passion for trout fishing and baseball, playing rec ball as a child. Additionally, James played on a bowling league with his parents as a child and later with his own group of bowling friends until a stroke prevented him doing so. James played golf every Sunday for several years with his foursome at Botetourt Country Club. In most recent years, JC took up the hobby of woodworking, creating bird houses, bird feeders and even doll beds for his granddaughter. He enjoyed going to the Greenwood Restaurant for weekend meals and milkshakes from Bratcher’s.
James retired from Wilson Trucking as a dock supervisor after 30 years of service.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 26 years, Lillian Hiner Cook; sons, Tim Cook of Salem, Jeff Cook and wife, Michelle, of Rocky Mount; granddaughter, Kendall Cook; sister, Phyllis Petcher and husband, Ralph; sister-in-law, Carol Laprad Cook; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel. The family received friends on Monday, Feb. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
