Lord Botetourt’s Joe Crump qualified for the state Group 3A golf tournament Monday when the Region 3D tournament was held at the Draper Valley course in Pulaski County. The Cavaliers were fourth as a team.
Abingdon High won the tournament with a score of 308, topping Hidden Valley by six strokes. Only the winning team advances to the state tournament so the Titans, who were considered a state contender, saw their team season come to an end.
Patrick County was third as a team with a 324 and LB was two strokes back at 326, 14 strokes ahead of fifth place Cave Spring.
“We didn’t play very well,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “I thought we had a shot to win it if we had played well, but we had some trouble down the stretch.”
Crump was third overall with a 76, qualifying for the state as an individual. Also scoring for LB were Brett Pennington at 80, Kyle Lograsso at 84 and Tucker Grimshaw at 86.
Crump will compete in the Group 3A state tournament at the Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
