The Blue Ridge District baseball tournament is scheduled for this week but games were in jeopardy at press time due to the threat of inclement weather. William Byrd, William Fleming, Northside and Staunton River had games to play Tuesday to determine semifinal opponents and the weather wasn’t looking good.
“They’ll maybe move it (the tournament) back a day, cut it down to four teams or maybe eliminate it all together,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “It all depends on the weather, and it doesn’t look good.”
The Cavaliers finished the regular season at 13-6. On Monday the Cavaliers took a 6-3 win over Staunton River in Moneta as JJ Tyree pitched five strong innings to pick up the win. Noah Medley drove in two runs for Botetourt as the Cavaliers won their third district game in a week’s time.
Last Tuesday, May 7, LB hammered winless William Fleming, 16-1. Cameron Bailey got the win on the mound and Noah Donaho had two home runs.
A day later the Cavaliers were shut out in Salem in a non-district game, 10-0, but they bounced back on Friday to take a 12-7 win at Northside. Medley got the win with four and a third innings pitched and Ethan Deschambault hurled the last two and two-thirds to pick up a save. Donaho had a single, a double and three runs batted in.
The Blue Ridge District championship is scheduled for William Fleming on Friday if weather allows, and the Region 3D tournament will begin next week.
