Students at Breckinridge Elementary recently enjoyed some tail-wagging fun as part of their reading unit, “Get Your Paws on a Good Book.” The special event featured a visit from several furry guests who helped bring the joy of reading to life.
Cameron and Kristina Carlisle, dog trainers and parents of second grader Troy, brought their dog Jax to the school for a live demonstration. Students watched in awe as Jax showed off some of the skills he’s learned through training.
Joining the fun was Ben Jones from Therapets of the Roanoke Valley, who introduced students to his therapy dog Patrick. Jones shared how Patrick helps bring comfort and smiles to people in a variety of settings.

Fourth and fifth graders Natalee Spangler, Briar Spangler, Kensie Kaufman, Carly McVey and Aida Simmons were all smiles as they spent time petting Patrick. Meanwhile, Gabrielle Yates introduced students canine pal Voodoo while first graders Evelyn Belcher, Milo Roldan, Lucas Monaghan, Hailey Barfield and Annaleigh Stern gave the friendly pup some gentle pats.
The event brought books and tails together in a memorable way, reinforcing that reading can be both educational and heartwarming.
