Dove, goose and squirrel hunting seasons open this week across Virginia.
The September Canada goose season is the first to open on Friday, Sept. 1. It runs through September 25 statewide. The bag limit is 10 daily, 30 in possession.
A Virginia Harvest Information Program (HIP) registration number, a federal migratory duck stamp, and a Virginia Migratory Waterfowl Conservation Stamp (unless license exempt) are also required to hunt geese during this season.
Electronic calls and unplugged shotguns are not allowed for hunting Canada geese.
Dove season and squirrel season opened Saturday, Sep. 2. The early part of dove season runs through November 1, but hunting hours are shorter during the first week.
The season is open from noon-sunset September 2-9, then it runs all day from September 9-October 29.
Later seasons are November 22-19 and December 23-January 15.
The bag limit is 15 per day, 45 in possession.
A HIP number also is required to hunt doves.
Gray, red and fox squirrel seasons open Saturday and run through February 28 for gray and red squirrels statewide and through January 31 for fox squirrels West of the Blue Ridge and in certain eastern counties, including Bedford.
The bag limit is six per day.
