Dabney S. Lancaster Community College is offering a series of four life support courses this semester through its non-credit program. Steve Hall is the instructor for all four courses, to be held in Room 417, Warren Hall, on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus.
Basic Life Support (BLS), offered through the American Heart Association on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The tuition fee is $65.
Heartsaver® First Aid, scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 1-6:30 p.m., is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services arrives. Students learn duties and responsibilities of first aid rescuers; first aid actions for medical emergencies, including severe choking, heart attack, and stroke; and skills for handling injury and environmental emergencies, including external bleeding, broken bones and sprains, and bites and stings. The fee is $45.
The goal of the PALS course, scheduled Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 14-15, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes. This course reinforces the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, and team dynamics. The tuition fee is $110.
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), scheduled Wednesday and Thursday, April 11112, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., conforms to a set of clinical interventions for the urgent treatment of cardiac arrest, stroke and other life-threatening medical emergencies, as well as the knowledge and skills to deploy those interventions. The tuition fee is $110.
