James River scored four runs in the first inning and seven in the second to take a 15-4 win over Bath County in a baseball game in Springwood Monday.
“Felt good to take care of business and put up some good numbers across the board,” said River coach Chase Henry. “We did a good job of staying within our zone at the plate and jumping out to an early lead. This was a complete effort from the offense, we strung along good at bats after good at bat and the score shows that.”
Hunter Mays and freshman Carter Birchead had two hits each to lead the Knights while Cam Saunders drove in three runs and Birchead and Evan Byers had two RBIs each. Mays and Byers scored three runs each.
Kody Park picked up the win on the mound with three innings of one-hit shutout ball.
“Kody Park has continued to be one of main pieces on the mound,” said Henry. “I’ve really been pushing some of our younger arms to really watch how Kody goes about his business. He competes every pitch and mixes it up really well and throws strikes. He’s been a great leader for us this year.”
With the win, River improved to 4-3 overall. The Knights are now off until April 22 when they host Patrick County in a Three Rivers District game.
“We still need to clean up our defense a bit but we only walked two on the mound and only struck out four times,” said Henry. “I’ll take that any day.”
