Central Academy Middle School seventh graders (from left) Madison Yount, Kaylee Johnson and Emma Lester watch the solar eclipse Monday afternoon on the school football field. The school division provided solar glasses for all students and staff, and delayed the end of the school day so students could watch the eclipse. CAMS made it an event with a pep rally, song, videos and a safety presentation before heading out to watch.

Monday’s eclipse wasn’t the only natural phenomenon that attracted attention in the past week. Friday evening, a huge rainbow sprang from the Bue Ridge Mountains at halftime of the James River-Lord Botetourt High School benefit football game in Springwood. Folks in the James River stands pulled out cell phones to get pictures of the rainbow. The two high school marching bands joined forces to play “Sweet Caroline” during the halftime show, and LBHS band members Nathan Frate playing senior alto saxophone, Jacob Cromer playing alto saxophone and Dempsey Rice on the sousaphone were captured as the rainbow lit up the background.
