Local author Rachel Nicole Edwards will give a presentation about the Catawba Iron Furnace and coal mines this Thursday night at the Fincastle Library. The presentation begins at 6 p.m.
The presentation will include many photos of Edwards’ hikes up North Mountain, which will show the appearance of the property, furnace, and mines on National Forest today. In addition, Edwards will read a couple of her poems about Catawba and share a video peeking inside one of the coal mines.
Edwards is the author of “Giollachrist: Lighting the Candle,” a story that’s setting was partly inspired by visiting the old coal mines with her grandfather.
Botetourt County Historical Society Director Lynsey Allie recently shared that this lecture is the first in a series that began prior to the pandemic. In March, Brook Allen is scheduled talk about her new historical fiction series about Santillane and Julia Hancock.
