Mike Lee’s students in recital October 20
Mike Lee’s 14th Annual Music Recital will be held at the D. Geraldine Lawson Performing Arts Theatre in Fincastle on October 20. The young ones will begin at 2 p.m. and the teen/adult recital will start at 4 p.m. There is no charge for this event although donations will be accepted.
Buchanan Dates To Remember
- Town of Buchanan Fall Clean Up – A dumpster will be available for town residents to use on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The dumpster will be located in the Town Park parking lot near the basketball courts. Be sure to bring proof of town residency, such as your water bill or tax bill. Appliances, furniture and other household items are allowed if you can load them into the tall dumpster yourself. Brush, leaves, tires, construction debris and toxic items including oil, paint, batteries, pesticides or any other chemicals are not allowed.
- Second Sunday Dinner – Enjoy dining in the historic Wilson Warehouse on Sunday, Oct. 13 from 12 noon until 2 p.m. This month’s menu includes Chicken Picatta over Linguini, Green Beans, Homemade Dinner Roll, Dessert and Beverage for $12, dine in or carry out.
Historical Society Founders Day Dinner October 25
The Botetourt County Historical Society will hold its 13th annual Founders Day Dinner on Friday, Oct. 25. It begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Fincastle United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 137 S. Church Street in Fincastle.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Peter Coogan, a professor at Hollins University, whose topic will be “October 1944: A World at War.” Coogan teaches American foreign relations, the history of international relations, revolution and war in Vietnam and modern American political history. He has conducted numerous seminars and published articles on British and American national security policy in the 20th century.

Botetourt GOP Ham Dinner October 12
The 53rd annual Botetourt County Republican Ham dinner will be held Saturday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Daleville. Tickets are $25 and may be obtained by call Donald Helms at 550-397-1796.
Bingo fundraiser for Mike Walters
An afternoon of Pampered Chef Bingo to benefit Mike Walters of Buchanan will be held at the Buchanan Volunteer Firehouse in Buchanan on October 12. Walters was injured in an accident in February and is in need of financial help.
The event kicks off with vendor shopping at 10 a.m. and bingo starting promptly at 11. Food and drinks will available for purchase. Bingo tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the bingo.

Democrats plan Red, White and Blue Jeans Dinner
The Botetourt Democratic Party will sponsor a Red, White and Blue Jeans Dinner on Monday, Oct. 21 at the Fincastle Firehouse, 25 Vine Street. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Special guests will be House of Delegates candidates Christian Worth, Democrat running in Lexington, and Jennifer Lewis, Democrat running in Waynesboro.

Drawing for P. Buckley Moss print October 17
- Buckley Moss has donated a framed print of “Roanoke Landmarks” to the Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs. The drawing is October 17 and tickets may be purchased by call Pattie or Melva at the Council of Garden Clubs, 343-4519.
Proceeds will benefit the Blue Star Memorial Marker to be dedicated on November 7 near the Mill Mountain Star and Moss Children’s Foundation.
Library program on cold frames, cool weather crops
Friends of the Buchanan Library will be hosting Donna Haley, Roanoke Master Gardner and Naturalist, at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Donna will be presenting the program “Cold Frames and Cool Weather Crops.” At this program, gardeners will learn how to stretch the growing seasons by using cold frames to get a jumpstart in the spring and to go later in the cooler weather. Everyone is invited and the program is free. The Buchanan Library is located at 19795 Main Street; 928-3005.
Another benefit planned for Shiloh Community Building
Another huge sale is in the works to benefit the Shiloh Community Building on Shiloh Road, Eagle Rock. It will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 (rain date Saturday, Oct. 26) to raise money to have heating and air conditioning installed in the building.
Items for sale include 4 chair tables and chairs, tables and odd chairs, chairs upholstery w/footstools, curio cabinet, end tables, card table, old milk can (Peerless Creamery, Clifton Forge), old table with fox hunting scene on tabletop, microwave stand, dishes, pots and pans, toys, flower pots, complete Christmas dish set, rocking chairs, old, old dollies from Eagle Rock Milling & Mfg. Co., Holiday make freezer, entertainment center, TV, small safe, patio table and four chairs, mirrors, area rugs, comforters, assortment of lamps, suitcases, cans of paint, dehumidifier, golf bag with clubs, rattan three-piece table set, chair cushions, small appliances, plant stand, brand new sandbox still in the box, wreaths, various flower arrangements, Christmas trees, floor exerciser (Body Tech), music box, lots of whatnots (including a pig collection set), snow shovel and more.
