Genealogy workshops at Eagle Rock
The Eagle Rock Library will begin offering “Getting Started with Genealogy” workshops in May, free of cost through Roanoke Valley Libraries. This is for those who are interested in learning about family history, or those who want to know how to use popular genealogy resources.
Workshops are scheduled: Thursday, May 17, at 10 a.m.; Monday, May 21, at 6 p.m.; and Thursday, May 31, at 10 a.m.
If possible, come prepared with your parents’ and grandparents’ place and date of birth. Call 928-2800 for more information.
Blue Ridge Library book sale
Friends of the Blue Ridge Library will be having a book sale at the library beginning on Thursday, May 17, at 5 p.m. Hours for the sale are: May 17 – 5-8 p.m., May 18 – 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and May 19 – 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The sale will offer a wide variety of both hardcover and paperback books. Most hardcover books are priced at $1 each and most paperback books are priced at 50 cents each.
Proceeds from the sale are used by the Friends to purchase items that the library needs. The Friends help to fund the annual Summer Reading Program, purchase furniture and equipment and also purchase promotional items.

Buchanan Dates To Remember
- Special Events Committee Meeting – The Buchanan Special Events Committee meeting will meet on Wednesday, May 9 at 7 p.m. in the large pavilion on the Buchanan Town Park.
- Police Memorial Bicycle Tour – Buchanan will welcome cyclists on Wednesday, May 10 as members of the Law Enforcement United Cyclists (LEU) arrive on the Buchanan Town Park beginning at 8:30 a.m. The group will be taking a break as part of their 250-mile ride ending in Washington D.C. LEU is a group of federal, state and local law enforcement officers who pedal to honor fallen law enforcement officers and work to raise money to help support families of fallen members. Each LEU rider must raise a minimum donation of $1,500 which goes to support several causes including summer camp for the children of fallen officers. - Second Sunday Dinner – Gather with family and friends in the historic Wilson Warehouse/Community House on Sunday, May 13 from 12:-2 p.m. for the monthly Second Sunday Dinner.
- Buchanan Lions Club – Members of the Buchanan Lions Club meet on the first and second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at North Star Restaurant. May’s meetings are scheduled for May 10 and 24. - Third Friday’s Block Party & Cruise In – Celebrate small town America during Buchanan’s Third Friday Block Party & Cruise on Friday, May 18 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Antique autos line Main Street showcasing vehicles from the early 1900s through the 1970s. May kicks off the Buchanan Art Series featuring the local band “Place Called Home.” An Appalachia rock ‘n roll outfit out of Roanoke, the band debuted in May 2016. The group has been described as “writing from the heart, playing from the soul.” Place Called Home features Wes Winebarger as vocals, playing guitar, and keys while Mike Loritsch plays on guitar, Jeremy Smelser on bass guitar, and Josh Smelser on drums.
‘Truevine’ topic at Genre Book Club
The Eagle Rock Library’s Genre Book Club will meet again on Saturday, May 12 at 10 to discuss “Truevine” by local author Beth Macy. Uncover the fascinating story of two brothers forced into the circus sideshow and their family’s struggle for justice and truth in the era of Jim Crow.
Buchanan Friends book discussion May 10
The Friends of the Buchanan Library will be hosting an evening of book discussion on Thursday, May 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the library. Everyone is invited to join the library’s patrons, Book Club members, and Friends for any evening of book discussions, discovering new authors and books to read, and to share in the love of reading. May programs at Buchanan Library
Two events are scheduled for the Buchanan Library.
Donna Haley, Roanoke Master Gardner and Naturalist, will be returning to the Buchanan Library on May 16 at 10 a.m. with the program “Attracting Birds and Butterflies to Your Garden.” Gardeners will learn about the beneficial flowers and shrubs that attract birds and butterflies to their gardens.
Mike Wolfe, a Botetourt beekeeper, will be at the Buchanan Library on Monday, May 21 from 6-7 p.m. talking about the importance of bees in the environment. Mike will cover beekeeping, the role that bees play in the environment, and how bees are critically important to the world’s food supply.
