The James River and Lord Botetourt football and volleyball teams will have their final scrimmages this week before opening the fall sports season. Next Monday is the first official day for Virginia High School League volleyball games and the football season opens Friday, August 30.
The James River football team scrimmaged at Nelson County last Friday and came away free of injury, which is key at this time of the year.
“Typical scrimmage stuff,” said River coach Tim Jennings. “Had both good and bad but we got some good film.”
The Knights will be home this Friday to scrimmage Rockbridge County at 6 p.m., then open the season at Buffalo Gap on August 30.
Lord Botetourt scrimmaged at Emory & Henry last Thursday against Dobyns-Bennett of Tennessee, a formidable opponent to say the least.
“We have a lot of things to work on,” said LB coach Jamie Harless. “Dobyns-Bennett is a 6A school and they’ll win seven or eight games this year. They have luxury boxes at their stadium, so that ought to tell you something.”
The Cavaliers are back on the road this Thursday for a scrimmage at Brookville. They’ll make their home debut on opening day against Division 4 E.C. Glass on August 30.
In volleyball, the James River team was scheduled to scrimmage Rockbridge at home on Tuesday while Lord Botetourt is home to Hidden Valley on Thursday of this week, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The two county schools will open the season against each other next Tuesday, August 27, in Daleville.
