He was born, lived, and died at home on his family’s farm, leaving it only for the two years that he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was born December 2, 1932, to Raymond and Elizabeth Markham, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him were three sisters, Elizabeth Wright, Wilma Markham, and Raye Rice; and one brother, Jackie Lee Markham.
Those left to treasure his memory include his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara Abshire Markham; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and John Hulvey; son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Cindy Wray Markham; grandson, Ryan Markham; sister-in-law, Madeline Markham; niece, Cindy Downs; niece-in-law, Jane Wright; nephews, Mark (Joanne) Rice, Randy (Mitzi) Markham, and Roger (Laurie) Markham; cousin, Melvin Goode; and numerous Abshire nieces and nephews. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to those who lovingly assisted him through the last months of his life, including hospice nurses: Donna, MaryLuz, Penny, and Kim; and caregivers: Pam, Judy, Tamara, Bonnie, and Kim.
Floyd retired from the C&P Telephone Company in 1992 with 36 years of service. He drove a school bus for Botetourt County schools for 13 years. He treasured his lifetime of farming. He was actively involved in Lithia Baptist Church for much of his life, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher, and in recent years, at Valley View Baptist Church, sharing his love of the Lord in many ways. He was a member of the American Legion for more than 60 years. He was a proud Mason and a member of James Evans Lodge No. 72 A.F.& A.M., Buchanan. He served in the Buchanan Lions Club for many years, taking several turns as president. He loved going on the Roanoke and Botetourt Farm Tours, seeing the country and spending time with farming friends.
