Lacks Family Cemetery
The graveyard is across from Watson Cemetery Arcadia on Chestnut Run Road (Rt. 618).
This cemetery is on private property, and was photographed in 2018 by Jerry Gill and in 2020 by Daryl Reed. The following grave markers and deaths were noted.
The birth and death dates are unknown for a Campbell infant. Family records show this to be the grave marker for the unnamed baby of Mary Campbell. Mary Campbell was a sister of Hattie Elizabeth Campbell Lacks.
Hattie Elizabeth Campbell Lacks was born 1882 and died in 1920. Elizabeth married E.W. (Emmett) Lacks in Botetourt County in 1903. Hattie is the daughter of Luther M. Campbell and Mary (Mollie) Fairburn of Bedford County. Emmett was interred in Portland, Ore. in 1929. E.W.L. is on Hattie’s marker in his memory.
H.L. (Homer) Lacks was the son of Emmett and Hattie Lacks. He died at the age of 2 in 1914.
S. (Sarah) Page Lacks was born in 1839. She was the wife of George Alexander Lacks. Sarah died in 1919. Sarah was the daughter of Edmund and Elizabeth Lacks Page of Bedford County. Sarah Lacks was Emmett Lacks’ mother and is listed as a “midwife” on the birth certificates for several of Emmett’s children.
Betty Lacks Tolley (no marker), daughter of Alexander and Sarah Lacks, was married to George Franklin Tolley. Betty was born in 1862 and died in 1940. Information from her death certificate indicates burial here. George Franklin Tolley (no marker) was born in 1867 and died in 1940. Jerry Gill indicates there is a family record showing that George F. Tolley and his wife, Bettie S. (Lacks) Tolley, are interred on the Lacks family farm (Lacks Graveyard) in Arcadia. There are no engraved head stones for Bettie or George, but the two sunken graves that are side by side and marked with only field stones are thought to be theirs. This burial was handled by Barley-Teaford Undertakers of Buchanan on their death certificate.
