Steven Gusler Frantz of Roanoke passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
He was born on July 20, 1941, at home in Botetourt County and grew up on the family farm. After graduation from Troutville High School in 1959, Steve joined the United States Army. He married Laura Almira Lilly in 1962. Steve served in the military, retiring in 1982. He served tours in Turkey, Vietnam, and Germany.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert Frantz and Hazel Gusler Frantz; son, Robert Woodrow Frantz; and sister, Norma Hancock Tomlinson.
Steve was an excellent mechanic and had a quick wit, infectious laugh and a tall tale for anything you asked him. He was always willing to help anyone who needed it.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Laura Almira Frantz; his daughter, Kimberly Barber; his brother, David Frantz (Terri); and his nieces and nephew, Lori Hancock, Andrea Jenks, Lawrence Lee Hancock, Rebecca Loflin, Rachel Frantz, and Allison Foutz.
Special thanks to his caregiver, Juanita; The VA Home Care Team was extraordinary, and Good Samaritan Hospice including nurses, Jimmy, Shea, Woodie, Sandy, Brittany, Clara, and Ginger, and Chaplain Tammy.
A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025, at Oakey’s North Chapel with Pastor Jay Robinette officiating. The family received friends one hour prior.
