A “Meet and Greet the Artist” reception for Anne Marshall Gillespie and Dan Jones will be held on Sunday, Aug. 8 from 2 until 5 p.m. at Lackey Studio in Daleville. Both artists are guests of the gallery for August.
Gillespie is a watercolor artist. A native of Southwest Virginia, she has lived in the mountains most of her life. Born in Tazewell, from early life, she was inspired by nature and spent countless hours exploring the hills and mountains.
After majoring in art at college, she moved around a bit before returning to Tazewell to teach art and English and raise her family. She lived there until her retirement from teaching in 2004 and then moved to Roanoke where she worked part-time for Blue Ridge PBS until 2011. Since then, she has continued to live on her high hill overlooking the Roanoke Valley and has been able to concentrate more on painting.
Marshall Gillespie has shown at the Floyd Artist Association Gallery, The Lost Pearl Gallery in Tazewell, and at Crafteria in downtown Roanoke. To see examples of her work, follow her on her Facebook page, Art by Anne Marshall Gillespie.
Photographer Dan Jones is a true local guy born and raised in Botetourt County. He attended the Botetourt school system then went on to Roanoke College and Medical College of Virginia. His wife Charlotte also grew up in Botetourt and they continue to live on a farm outside of Fincastle.
Jones began pursuing photography while in medical school. His training has been through on line courses, classroom and field courses, and a lot of field work in the mountains of Botetourt but also throughout many of the national parks in the United States and on several trips to Europe and the British Isles where he and his wife still have historical roots and family in Wales and Scotland.
Jones uses all digital equipment in his field work and post processing of the photos. His works have won national awards in National Park contests and are also featured in corporate boardrooms and homes as well as commercial calendars and a number of magazines over the years.
Jones can frequently be found on the Blue Ridge Parkway for sunrises and sunsets and storms. He also uses his farm which faces the mountains between Fincastle and Craig County for seasonal photography, informal portrait photography, and his love of stormy weather and wildlife photos.
Jones’ photos can frequently be found on Facebook and Instagram as well as his photography website, photoartistrybydan.com. He also maintains a personal gallery of his work at his home which can be viewed by contacting him for an appointment at drdrdanno@yahoo.com.
