Action on the pitch heated up for the Cavalier soccer teams with the region tournaments nearing. The boys won two matches in overtime and the girls had an easy time with William Fleming.
The boys played a tough Fleming team at LB last Tuesday and took a 4-3 win, scoring in the last minute of overtime play. The two teams had battled to a scoreless tie in their first meeting.
Dylan Salvi had a three-goal hat trick in the win over Fleming. Arun Hajra had the other goal in the exciting win.
On Friday, LB played host to William Byrd and prevailed in overtime again, this time by a 5-4 score. Salvi had his second hat trick of the week with three more goals and Chase Peery and Zach Ruhman scored one each.
“After a two-game loss the week before, to finish this week with two big overtime wins was simply fun,” said coach Tim Wright. “We had four different goal scorers across four different positions. This is evidence of the creativity and the dynamic offensive approach we have been working on the past few practices.”
The two wins lifted the boys to 4-2-1 on the season. They were scheduled to play at Staunton River on Tuesday of this week, then host Franklin County on Friday in Daleville.
“We’re three games away from completing the regular season and hope to finish out with three wins, setting up to be a higher seed going into the region playoffs,” said Wright.
The girls had just one game last week and had little trouble downing Fleming in Roanoke, 9-1. Nine different Cavaliers scored, including Cadence Peters, Darden Goode, Alexis Bonhotel, Lyndsay Prilliman, Emma Rice, Ava Brumfield, Allison Kirby, Samarah Hambrick-King and Ally Spangler. Kaleigh Horan had two assists while Hambrick-King, Spangler, Brumfield and Mikel Johnson had one each.
With the win the girls remained undefeated at 7-0. They were scheduled to host Staunton River on Tuesday, and on Friday they’re off to Franklin County.
