Botetourt County Health Department issued notices Monday, April 16 that there’s been a confirmed case of rabies in the Hardbarger Road area south of Buchanan.
The alert says on April 12 Botetourt Animal Control collected a fox in the 1200 block of Hardbarger Road, and the fox was confirmed to have rabies on April 13.
The alert asks that anyone who has had possible animal or human contact with the fox should contact the Botetourt County Health Department at 473-8240.
The notice notes rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. It is preventable in animals through vaccination but is fatal to both animals and humans if left untreated.
