The alert says on April 13 Botetourt Animal Control captured a raccoon in the 100 block of Hollymeade Lane and the raccoon was confirmed to have rabies on April 16.
The alert asks that anyone who has had possible animal or human contact with the raccoon should contact the Botetourt County Health Department at 473-8240.
The notice notes rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. It is preventable in animals through vaccination but is fatal to both animals and humans if left untreated.
It’s the second rabies alert in Botetourt within a week and matches the total number of confirmed rabies cases in 2016. Last year, through, there were five confirmed cases, according to Virginia Department of Health (VDH) records. All have been in wild animals— skunks, foxes and raccoons.
