Fincastle and area are well on the way toward offering the largest and most diverse festival in the area in the last half century, featuring history, music, food, arts and a lot more, according to organizers of the upcoming 51st Historic Fincastle Festival.
Being organized by Historic Fincastle Inc. (HFI), in conjunction with the Town of Fincastle and the Volunteer Fire Department, the event, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, is rapidly taking shape as a must attend event for area residents and visitors alike, both young and old.
Because of the success of last year’s festival, HFI has committed to extending the area involved in this year’s festival, increasing both the variety and number of events and entertainment opportunity for those participating and attending.
Hours for the festival are 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and the area involved extends from Roanoke Street near the Post Office to Back Street, Main Street from US 220 to the old Baptist Church, and all of Academy Street. Events already scheduled and growing in numbers and participants are craft vendors, artists, local food and beverages, memorabilia, unique shopping opportunities, a quilt show, the history of the area, a book sale at the Fincastle Library, a car show, and a “Touch-A-Truck” area where young people can touch and climb into a variety of extra large vehicles. And it’s all free admission!
It is requested that artists, vendors, crafters and others wishing to participate to please submit an application to HFI at P.O. Box 19, Fincastle, 24090. Applications can be downloaded on line at hisfin.org.
Also included in the day’s events are a return of the Revolutionary War Interpreters at Wysong Park, viewing courthouse historical records from 1774 until present, and the current Clerk of the Court “visiting” as the first Clerk from the 18th century Court sessions. A tour of the historic town will also be available.
The final event of the day will be “Fired Up” at the local fire station on US 220 from 4 until 9 p.m. featuring the band, Seven Mile Ford, BBQ chicken dinners, beer and other beverages, along with activities and entertainment for young people. The event is organized and conducted by the Fincastle Volunteer Fire Department, Big Lick Entertainment, the Town of Fincastle, and HFI. There is a $5 per person attendance fee for “Fired Up.”
The major sponsor of the festival is The Bank of Fincastle. Other sponsors are APX, MW Dunbar Construction, Freedom First Credit Union, Heritage Family Market, LUMOS, MKB Realtors, Oakey’s, and Woodsdale Events. For the evening’s “Fired Up,” the main sponsor is Bank of Botetourt, and additional sponsors Cardinal Rubber, Bryant Orchards, Prestige Lawn and Landscape, and Re/Max.
