Botetourt County 4-H Horse and Pony Club is recognizing the accomplishments of three of its members.
Billie McClung has been selected as one of Virginia’s 4-H Horse Ambassadors for the 2020/2021 year. 4-H Horse Ambassadors are selected to serve a one-year term, they help lead a variety of outreach and public service programs, connect with the community, assist with 4-H local and district level equine events, meet with legislators, and represent the 4-H Horse program at the state level.
Rachel Buchanan and Ashley Wilmer recently participated in the 2020 State 4-H Show District Challenge Hippology, Horse Judging, and Horse Bowl virtual competitions and the Block and Bridle Virtual Hippology and Horse Judging competitions. Hippology is a competition consisting of multiple-choice questions and identification of slides based on all aspects of equine management, breeds, and equine anatomy and physiology. Horse Bowl is a game show-type competition involving questions on equine science, veterinary science, and the horse industry.
Rachel and Ashley both finished in the top ten in their divisions at the State 4-H District Challenge. Ashley competed in Junior Horse Bowl, Junior Hippology, and Junior Horse Judging. Rachel participated in Senior Horse Judging and Senior Horse Bowl. At the Block and Bridle competition Ashley finished 10th overall in the Junior Horse Judging, non-reasons division, and 32nd out of 70 in Junior Hippology. Camp registration begins on Apr. 5
Registration for the 2021 Botetourt County Junior 4-H Camp (June 7-11) will officially open on Monday, April 5. Registration brochures will be going to the elementary and middle schools this week to youth that are eligible to attend camp based on their age. Any registration forms and payments received before Monday, April 5, will not be accepted.
While 4-H’ers will be attending camp this summer, available spaces for campers will be limited. As always, registration is open on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be COVID-19 protocols in place that include mask mandates and a new “class track” option, as well as others.
With the adjustments that are being made this year, the camp fee has risen as a result, but scholarship applications are available upon request.
Those who do not receive a brochure or would like additional information may contact 4-H Extension Agent Tyler Painter at 473-8260.
