Doug Doughty is a sports journalist who spent 47 years at The Roanoke Times covering regional sports and Virginia athletics. Last year, The Times “invited” Doughty and a number of his colleagues to retire when Lee Enterprises, out of Davenport, Iowa, purchased the publication along with nearly a dozen other Virginia newspapers.
Doughty, known as “The dean of the University of Virginia beat,” spent years traveling up to Charlottesville covering UVA athletics and venturing throughout the state covering high school sports. He also covered high school football recruiting in the state for 38 years, submitting an annual Top 25 of the state’s top football prospects. He continues to write a college notebook published by The Virginian-Pilot and other publications. Doughty also appears on Greg Roberts Live, airing weekdays from 5-7 p.m. on WFIR 107.3 FM/960 AM in Roanoke.
The Fincastle Herald is pleased to have Doughty contribute new stories for Botetourt County’s local news source.
His wife, Beth, serves on Bank of Botetourt’s board of directors. She spent many years running the Roanoke Regional Partnership as director. She was a part of the economic development in Botetourt over the past several years, including bringing the Eldor Corporation and Constellation Brands to Daleville. She also ran the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce for nine years.
