The Botetourt Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation held its annual “JAKES” Day for youth on September 21.
A smaller than usual group of youngsters ages 7-17 enjoyed shooting BB guns, shotguns and .22 rifles, in addition to participating in archery and a turkey hunting and calling station.
While ages 12 and under competed in a turkey calling contest, ages 13-17 competed for points at each station, with the winner receiving a new rifle.
JAKES turkey calling winners were Caroline Simpson, first; Simmons Yount, second; and Addison Jones, third.
The X-Treme Jakes winner was Brian Howard, and the runner-up was Cain Bowyer.
The Botetourt Longbeards will next partner with Mill Creek Baptist Church’s outdoor ministry on November 16 for the annual Wheelin’ Sportsmen Deer Hunt.
