The James River boys will wrap up the soccer regular season this week as they travel to Radford on Wednesday and Carroll County on Thursday.
River is coming off a busy week, beginning with a 4-3 overtime win on the road against Alleghany.
“We didn’t really play that well but managed the win in the end,” said coach Jared Whiting. “We possessed the ball very well through midfield but didn’t finish strong in the final third of the field.”
Alleghany had three penalty kicks in the game and had a 3-1 lead before River rallied to tie the game. The Knights then won in overtime.
On Thursday River lost to Radford, 3-0, in a game that was closer than the score indicates.
“It was really a close game,” said Whiting. “It could have gone either way. It was 1-0 until the last couple minutes so we had to gamble something and push almost everyone forward to try to tie it up and that cost a couple goals late. We out shot Radford, out possessed them and, I think, out hustled them but didn’t out score them.”
On Friday in Pearisburg the Knights lost to Giles, 6-1.
“Giles has a lot of size, speed and strength and were able to muscle us off the ball all night,” said Whiting. “I know the guys gave all they had, it just wasn’t enough. I was very Proud of their effort.”
