Ian Hester won the boys’ 300 hurdles and Katelyn Wiley was second in the girls’ race at the state Class 2 track meet at East Rockingham High in Elkton last weekend.
Hester won the boys’ race with a time of 40.90, winning by almost a second. The runner-up time was 41.83 by a Union High athlete.
In the girls’ 300 hurdles, Wiley was nipped at the wire and had to settle for second place. Katelyn ran a time of 46.64, about a tenth of a second off the winning time of 46.53 by a Wilson Memorial girl. The time was Wiley’s personal best.
“I felt bad for Katelyn but she took it pretty good,” said River coach Greg Dyer. “When you run your personal best, that’s about all you can ask.”
Wiley also placed in the 100 high hurdles and the high jump, scoring all of River’s points. Maggie Walker won the girls’ Class 2 championship and River, thanks to Wiley, finished 18th in the state.
Maggie Walker also won the boys’ state title while River finished 15th. In addition to Hester’s state championship the boys got points from Logan Williams with an eighth in the discus and the 4×800 relay team that took fourth. The team consisted of Daniel Holter, Anthony Etzler, Camden Powell and Cole Miller.
